Tonight I managed to get basic game save/loading functionality working. Thankfully GameMaker Studio’s built in support for this is pretty good. I also updated the sprites for the special power up items: bombs, guns, high jump. Everything is coming along really nicely. Soon I can settle into a groove of focusing on the enemies and the levels. I think the next non-gameplay related thing to cover is the menus. Main menu, pause menu. There are a lot of other things on the ‘possible enhancements’ list that I’m putting off for now to avoid feature creep. If I want to finish this game I’ve got to avoid adding too many more features, especially any that don’t add value for the player.
